WinterLights

WinterLights Celebrations is a national competition encouraging municipalities, large and small throughout Canada, to celebrate light with decorative, cultural and spiritual programs, with the objective of creating attractions for tourism from within Canada and abroad.

A Celebration of Light and Life is the program's slogan and it captures the essence of the competition and its benefits.

WinterLights Celebrations was launched in 2001 to provide a winter focus for the established Communities in Bloom program. The program is based on promoting community action and involvement in expressing the community spirit of Canada's neighbourhoods, public spaces and streets through light shows, cultural events and spiritual linkages with light.

WinterLights Celebrations is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, neighbourhood and heritage awareness and beautification through community participation and the challenge of a national competition.

Community Enhancement Grants

To maintain momentum with the WinterLights initiative, Council agreed to fund a Community Enhancement Grant Program. The Community Enhancement Program offers an opportunity for community groups to help enhance our landscapes and activities through a matching grant program with the City.

The City of Prince George received a 5-Star rating in the Over 50 000 population
category of the 2007-2008 WinterLights Celebrations program. The annual awards
ceremony was held in Saint John, New Brunswick on February 9, 2008.

The judges, Ivan Stinson and Dorota Grudniewicz, who evaluated Prince George, were
impressed by the WinterLights Committee, who demonstrated remarkable skill in
integrating the various groups and organizations to work together for a common cause -
the enhancement of quality of life and civic pride. The judges commented that “this
Committee, with its dedication, cooperative approach, enthusiastic leadership and varied
skills, has been most successful in having a diverse group of individuals and
organizations not only embrace the program but also actively use their particular
aptitudes to support it. A prime example of spirit and cooperation is the Festival of Trees,
which emanates beauty and generates significant funds for the Hospital Foundation”.

Now into its seventh edition, Winterlights Celebrations is the winter edition of the popular Communities in Bloom Program and encourages all Canadians to join in their local community events and activities, and to experience the beauty and thrill of winter. During December, Prince George hosted trained volunteer judges that evaluated our community in Visual Presentation, Festive Season Celebrations, Winter Pleasures, Good Will Programs and Tourism & Promotion.

WinterLights Celebrations fosters civic pride, neighbourhhood celebrations and winter pleasures through community involvement and the challenge of a national competition.
