History
The City of Prince George has been actively involved with the Communities in Bloom program since 2002, initially under the Civic Pride Committee. We participated in the BC competition (50,000 – 100,000 population category) in 2002, 2003 and won provincials in 2004. This allowed us to compete at the National level in 2005 where we proudly received the national Turf & Ground Cover Award for our beautiful Rotary Soccer Fields. In 2006 we again competed in the national category against 8 other communities across Canada. We were honored to win this prestigious award, receiving the highest bloom rating of 5 blooms and a special mention for our Community Spirit. The City of Prince George, a finalist in the International challenge – large category of the 2008 Edition of Communities in Bloom, received a 5 Bloom rating and a special mention for Quality Turf on Sport and Park Facilities
Communities in Bloom - It’s more than just flowers...
Communities in Bloom (CIB) is Canada's program for the improvement of the quality of life through beautification, community involvement, environmental awareness, and heritage conservation. This national program assists Canadian communities of all sizes to improve their quality of life while encouraging community involvement and civic pride.
The appeal of the program goes beyond simply creating attractive communities. While this is important, CIB's real strength comes from increasing participation and building a sense of pride through community involvement. Through encouragement, education, networking and friendly competition, these benefits make Communities in Bloom a contest where everyone is truly a winner.
In July and August, qualified CIB judges visit and evaluate each municipality on 8 categories: overall tidiness, urban forestry, landscapes, floral displays, turf areas, environmental effort, heritage conservation and community involvement. We gain international recognition and receive expert feedback that helps us build an even better community.
Communities in Bloom is a volunteer based, non profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental awareness and municipal beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a competition.
