2008 Beetle Tree Debris Removal Assistance to Residents Program
Industrial Forestry Services (IFS) of Prince George is managing the Beetle Tree Debris Removal Assistance to Residents Program. IFS provides a project manager, crew supervisors, office space, vehicles, training, a safety program and equipment to support a work experience program for a minimum of seventeen (17) EI eligible people to assist in dealing with the mountain pine beetle epidemic, in the City of Prince George, BC.

The City’s Job Creation Partnerships program, with funding contributed by the Government of Canada, is again available to assist residents. This program has a primary goal of reducing forest fire fuels in the City, to reduce the risk of interface forest fires. The program has a second priority of assisting residents to reduce forest fire fuels on their lands caused by the mountain pine beetle, by removing the pine tree debris free of charge.
This program will be available to assist residents until July 11, 2008. An extension or additional program is not planned at this time.
The assistance to residents program is a free service for assisting residents on residential size urban lots. It is made up of crews of workers who move debris by hand, feeding the debris into a chipper, moving fences and reinstalling them. Residents are responsible for hiring a tree faller to fall and remove the trees, this assistance program reduces the cost to residents by removing the pine tree debris free of charge. The goal is to reduce the amount of dead trees and tree debris in the City, to reduce the forest fire hazard.

Who is Eligible
- Private property and residential properties within the boundaries of the City of Prince George
- NO Commercial Properties.
- Residences must be the primary residence of the owner to be a first priority on the list. All other private properties will be the second priority for crews. Privately owned rental homes may be added to the list as a second priority when crews are not occupied with other work.
The Removal of Mountain Pine Beetle Debris is a Two Stage Program.
Stage One
- Sign-Up: Phone 564-4115 Local 237 to Registration for Assistance
- Each residential property is restricted to a maximum of 2 crew days to remove and/or re-install fences and remove pine tree logging slash up to 6 inches in diameter. It is up to the property owner to decide how to make best use of the available time with this service.
- Residents are responsible for contracting to fall and remove any infested pine trees on their property.
- Residents are responsible for securing their property while fences are removed under this service.
- Residents are responsible for Slash until crews arrive, ensure you do not create a fire hazard
- Do not store slash on City property, it must remain on your property
Stage Two
- The Property owner must phone 564-4115 Local 237 and notify the Community Awareness Coordinator when tree removal is completed, before slash removal work will begin.
- The property owner must sign an Agreement before slash removal and fence work begins.
- Crews will provide beetle slash removal service on weekdays between 8:00am and 4:30pm, only when safe to do so.
Slash Removal Criteria
- All properties are restricted to a maximum of 2 crew days.
- The crews pick up pine tree slash only, comprised of tree branches and treetops up to 6 inches in diameter The crew will not fall or remove trees or other yard debris.
- Crews will Carry and/or drag logging slash, up to a maximum of 200 feet by hand from site to a portable chipper.
- No slash piles created by a machine will be picked up. Only hand piled slash or loose slash will be picked up. Machine piles are too large and tightly packed to be separated or moved by hand, and usually have dirt pushed into the piles. These will not be picked up by our crews to avoid staff strain and injury, and avoid damage to the chipper blades.
Residents can assist with this program by providing a safe work environment for crews. For further information, residences may contact the Community Awareness Coordinator at 564-4115 Local: 237.
