Trail System Master Plan
In March of 1998, the Leisure Services Department of the City of Prince George commissioned a study to develop a conceptual master plan for a city wide trail system. The Prince George City Wide Trail System Master Plan is part of the City's response to the results of the PERC Leisure Needs Study (April 1997), which identified trails at the top of the list of leisure space use with over 700,000 visits per year. This study also indicated that over 67% of the households that responded to the survey indicated that they use trails and walkways. This is consistent with national trends towards trail use and popularity. The Perc report has recommended a “more and better” trail system.
The study has been conducted under the direction of the Parks Division within the Community Services Department, and is intended to provide a comprehensive planning document for the design and implementation of a City wide trail system. An important part of the planning process, and to the viability of the final document, was to ensure adequate professional assessment and to provide a platform for public input. These requirements were satisfied with the establishment of the Client Group, consisting of representatives from City Departments, and the Focus Group, made up of representatives of various trail user groups. Regional representatives from the Ministry of Forests, Crown Lands, B.C. Parks, and the Fraser Fort George Regional District were also consulted. Finally, a public meeting was held to present the preliminary plan to the community. In general, there is support for the plan from all groups.
The objective of the study is to present a succinct, practical document that is focused on identifying the design implications of the needs of the trail users and to develop a City wide trail system.
