Arts & Culture
The City of Prince George endeavours to be BC’s Northern Arts Capital through providing access to the arts for all citizens by supporting the arts, encouraging partnerships, stimulating excellence and acknowledging and promoting the contribution of the arts towards providing an excellent quality of life in Prince George.
The City of Prince George has developed an Arts Policy (1997) as well as a Public Art Policy (2001). In 2007 the City contracted a consultant to inventory current public art as well as conduct a public input process into the future of Public Art in Prince George (Transforming Public Art).
The guiding principles of the arts policy are that:
- The arts are integral to all aspects of community life
- The status of the arts must be maintained at a high level
- Support for the arts is important to the development of the City of Prince George
- Learning, appreciation and participation in the arts must be encouraged
- Partnerships between the City of Prince George and arts organizations are essential
- Excellence is important in artistic endeavours
Public Art
Prince George has a variety of pieces of public art and it continues to grow. In 2007 the “Transforming Public Art” report was created. It inventoried public art and included a public input process on the future of public art in Prince George.
The City continues to work with a variety of community groups and organizations to establish more public art. One of the methods of assistance is the creation of the “Community Art Program Grant”. It offers matching funds of up to $5000 to encourage artists to involve and collaborate with the community in the creation of public art. Spirit Bears
In 2005/2006 The City partnered with the Two Rivers Gallery and the BC Lions Society to bring the Spirit Bear program to Prince George. Life size fiberglass Kermode bears were transformed into works of art by local artist. These were auctioned off for charity and a few are still displayed for public viewing.
