What is Recycling in Prince George?
Each year, the average household in Prince George produces 833 kg of garbage. In 2007, a Waste Characterization Study[pdf] was conducted that assisted the City in determining what materials are not only in the existing waste stream, but also what materials may be best served by any future recycling programs. The City of Prince George is currently working with the Regional District of Fraser Fort George on their Regional Solid Waste Management Plan that will identify waste reduction initiatives for the region. 
The current recycling program is a drop depot system that uses multi-material bins placed throughout the City. These bins accept all fiber materials (paper, cardboard, boxboard, and mixed paper products), newspaper, tin cans and type 2 plastics - milk jugs). Yard & garden waste can be dropped off free of charge at both Transfer & Recycle Stations, as well as at the Foothills Landfill.

When it comes to making a new purchase, buying products with little or no packaging and avoiding disposable or over-packaged items are ways of helping to make a dent in our consumption. Product manufacturers and industry are becoming more involved in the lifecycle of their goods and many have formed product stewardship organizations.
