FireSmart: Protecting Your Community from Wildfire
You and your neighbours can reduce the hazards of wildfire by following some simple steps. Take the FireSmart Assessment test. Is your home at risk?
From The Homeowners FireSmart Manual:
Over the last 10 years, on average over 2,500 wildfires were started in British Columbia each year consuming over 25,000 hectares of forested land annually. Thousands of families were recently evacuated from their communities and hundreds of homes destroyed.
If you live in or near a forested region of our province, sooner or later you may have to contend with the spread of a wildfire. The best protection against loss, damage or injury due to wildfire is prevention.
Following the FireSmart Home Owners Manual can help reduce that risk.
Prince George Fire/Rescue has created a presentation on interface fire protection issues, available below. It contains information on causes of damage as well explanations of fire behaviour and what you can do to help protect your property.

Educational Programs
Each year hundreds of children, and adults, enjoy tours of the fire halls during which Fire Fighters discuss and promote fire safety. In addition to hall tours, the Fire Prevention staff provide a number of programs that are designed for specific age groups. You are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to learn about fire safety.
- Pre-School
- Ages 3-5 yrs old. This is a very basic program that includes a video and a short talk on fire safety and burn prevention. The kids also get to see a fire fighter dressed up in full fire fighting gear. Total time is about 30-40 minutes.
- Primary Grades
- Kindergarten to Grade 3. This program includes a talk on fire awareness and burn prevention. The kids view a video then go through the McDonalds Fire Safety House to have a practice fire drill. Total time for the lecture portion is about 45 minutes to an hour. To run a class through the Fire Safety House takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The Fire Safety House runs between mid-March to September, depending on weather.
- Intermediate Grades
- Grades 4-7. This program includes a few different video clips. It includes fire awareness and burn prevention education. Total time runs about 1 hour.
- Grade 8/"CAP" Classes
- This is a “stepped up” program. The kids at this age get a little more reality, and a more involved lecture, which includes some video clips. This has proven quite popular with the high schools, and has been very well received. Total time runs around 1 hour (Older age groups can be covered in this same program).
- Adult Groups
- This lecture is designed to bring real awareness in regards to fire safety, and the reality of fire to the grown-ups. This segment has grown over time, and has proven quite popular with those who attend. Total time including video clips runs just over 1 hour.
- Juvenile Fire Setter Programs
- This program is designed to address the problems and concerns with children that play with fire. Each year hundreds of children in North America are hurt or killed in fire related incidents. This program is intended to stop any problems with fire play before a disaster occurs. The school district uses this program on a regular basis. Any incident regarding fire, even a seemingly insignificant action like flicking a lighter in the hallway, is dealt with through this program. These incidents are taken seriously, because the next incident where a child flicks a match or lighter may be disasterous.
- Fire Extinguisher Demonstrations
- Fire Prevention Staff provide a lecture and video for fire extinguisher training. How to react and how to use a fire extinguisher is covered. At this point, a “hands-on” training with a live fire is not possible, however the basic knowledge is good for everyone and will assist in knowing what to do, and when to do it.
- Fire and Evacuation Drills
- The Fire Department will provide assistance with fire drills. It is strongly recommended that employees attend this awareness lecture. This will help them respond correctly, and show why fire drills should be taken seriously. It definitely makes the Fire Warden's job easier when the other employees respond correctly.
The Fire Department is interested in discussing fire/safety with any group to bring awareness and education to as many people as possible. Although usual times for booking are Tuesday through Friday, during normal working hours, evening and weekend appointments can be made.
For further information regarding any of these programs please contact the Fire Prevention Branch at 561-7667.
