Flood Emergency Update
February 14, 2008Last week we received the good news that the risks associated with the ice jam and flood on the Nechako River were lowering. After more than two months into the emergency I am certain that I am not alone in welcoming this news.
This situation has been a challenging one for our community, and for some residents and businesses specifically. Throughout the event we received a variety of suggestions from the public on how to deal with the flooding. We also had upwards of 100 people attending our Community Information Forums to get updates and to speak with emergency and recovery personnel. As well, we have had a team of hard working emergency staff and ice experts guiding us.
Reflecting on all that has occurred, the level of cooperation, support and encouragement we have seen these past two months is a great example of the pride, spirit and caring our community is known for. Not only have we come through what we hope is the worst of the situation, but we will also be known for our innovative and creative systems that have been implemented. Data from the warm water and ground water solutions are now part of ongoing ice jam research and will help with future incidents of this nature. The longer term study that is underway will address prevention of similar events in the future and contribute to making our community safer.
Our emergency response team will continue to monitor the situation. The flood mitigation works will remain in place until more permanent solutions are implemented. As well, the Emergency Social Services (ESS) Team will be available for as long as required. The Prince George Support Team (PGST) is now assisting those residents feeling the effects of the ice jam and flood. Our staff has already begun to work with the most affected residents to prepare individual Personal Action Plans (PAPs). These individual plans will assist the homeowners in listing the tasks to be done in preparation for the work required to return homes to their pre-flood conditions.
With these response and recovery measures in place, the Emergency Operations Center Team has determined it is also time for the format of the Community Information Forum to change. The purpose of the weekly CIF was to address unmet needs that were identified, and this has been done.
Regular communication with the Nechako River Residents Action Coalition and Nechako River Industry Group will continue. The EOC and City will also communicate information related to the ice jam and flood as required through the media, via the city’s website, and with presentations to Council and community groups on an on-going basis.
Again, I thank all those who continue the work to keep our community safe.
Sincerely,
CITY OF PRINCE GEORGE
Colin Kinsley
Mayor
